The Block, Australia’s beloved reality TV renovation series, has undergone significant transformations since its inception in 2003. Host Scott Cam and executive producer Justin Sturzaker recently shed light on the show’s evolution, particularly its move from Sydney to Melbourne, which has become its primary filming location for over a decade.
The series began in Sydney, with its first three seasons filmed in 2003, 2004, and 2010. However, a pivotal decision was made to relocate the show to Melbourne for its fourth season, marking the beginning of a new era for The Block. This move was driven by several factors, including the need for a fresh concept and the recognition of Melbourne’s passionate design and art culture.
Scott Cam explained that the show’s revival in 2010 prompted a major format change. The decision to air five nights a week necessitated a complete overhaul of the show’s concept. Justin Sturzaker added that Melbourne had consistently been the top-performing market for The Block in terms of audience engagement, making it an ideal new home for the series.
The relocation to Melbourne coincided with other significant changes to the show’s format. The production team introduced challenges and brought in Shelley Craft as the ‘Challenge Master.’ These additions, combined with the increased filming schedule of 16 hours a day, allowed for more dynamic content and real-time problem-solving on screen.
Over the years, The Block has continued to evolve, with the production team constantly seeking new and exciting locations and renovation projects to captivate their audience. This commitment to innovation has been key to the show’s longevity and success.
Despite its Sydney origins, there are currently no plans for The Block to return to the Harbor City. Scott Cam cited difficulties with council approvals as a major obstacle. Shelley Craft humorously added that Sydney’s notorious traffic would make for less exciting television. The production team has found Melbourne and its surrounding areas more accommodating, with better support from local councils and more obtainable real estate options.
The show’s 20th season, a significant milestone, is set to take place on Phillip Island, located 90 minutes south of Melbourne. This popular tourist destination, known for its wildlife and natural beauty, will see five teams transform rundown holiday homes into luxury properties. The choice of Phillip Island reflects The Block’s ongoing commitment to exploring diverse locations and presenting unique renovation challenges.
Looking ahead, executive producer Julian Cress has announced that the 21st season will be filmed in Daylesford, Victoria. This decision comes after a brief setback when the original plans for the 2024 season in Daylesford had to be relocated due to permit issues and local complaints. The successful approval of plans for a “tree change” season in Daylesford demonstrates The Block’s ability to adapt and overcome obstacles, ensuring its continued success and innovation in the reality TV landscape.
As The Block enters its third decade on Australian television, it continues to captivate audiences with its blend of renovation drama, design inspiration, and the human stories of its contestants. The show’s journey from Sydney to Melbourne and beyond is a testament to its enduring appeal and ability to reinvent itself while staying true to its core concept.
